Lambs grazing beneath solar panels at an Oregon State University research farm had access to 38% less forage than lambs in an open pasture, yet gained almost exactly the same amount of weight. Researchers found that shade produced higher-quality forage with more protein and digestibility, while also giving the animals relief from heat and reducing water use.
