A highway in Wisconsin became an unexpected test ground for recycled industrial sand. In 1990, Waupaca Foundry supplied about 20,000 tons of used foundry sand for a pilot road project. Twelve years later, the company was contracted to provide 80,000 tons for Highway 10 near Waupaca. The shift showed how a material once treated as waste could become useful construction fill, while reducing demand for newly mined sand.
