How a 12-inch coconut fiber roll can hold a failing streambank together is easier to understand than it looks. The simple coir log slows rushing water, traps silt and protects exposed soil from being washed downstream. Made from tough coconut husk fibers, it gives native grasses and roots time to grow. As vegetation takes over, the temporary barrier can gradually fade while the living bank becomes stronger.
