In 2019, New York deployed 4.5 million pounds of retired Mill Basin Drawbridge materials at Hempstead Reef off Long Island’s South Shore, adding to the artificial reef
The Mill Basin Drawbridge has been intentionally submerged at Hempstead Reef to create a habitat for marine life. Research suggests that while artificial reefs can significantly bolster fish populations, their success is contingent upon various factors such as location and species diversity. This project aims not only to support marine ecosystems but also to enhance local economies through improved opportunities for recreational fishing and diving activities.
