NHAI seeks Supreme Court relief from stray cattle shelter duty to curb highway accidents

The National Highways Authority of India has approached the Supreme Court for relief. NHAI wants to shed its responsibility for building animal shelters along national highways. This responsibility was previously directed by the court to reduce animal-related accidents. The authority cites a lack of statutory duty and expertise for this task. Building and managing these shelters would impose a significant financial burden of Rs 7,000 crore.
