India’s August rains fall 16% below average, lowest in three years

India's August rainfall registered sixteen percent below average, its lowest in three years. The El Nino weather pattern suppressed the monsoon, widening the rainfall deficit. This August shortfall increased the seasonal monsoon deficit to fourteen percent. Data compiled by the India Meteorological Department showed these figures on Monday. The deficit was thirteen percent at the end of July.
