In 1900, financier JP Morgan bought 117 acres of Maine’s coast, including Sand Beach and Great Head, as a wedding gift for his daughter Louisa. Decades later, after her death and the 1947 fire destroyed much of the family estate, Louisa’s daughter Eleanor donated about 100 acres to Acadia National Park in 1949.
