An unexpected discovery at Turkey Point nuclear plant in 1978 initiated a crocodile recovery. Engineers built canals which created an accidental, protected nesting habitat for the reptiles. A monitoring program has since tagged over ten thousand hatchlings since its inception. These crocodiles are not exposed to radiation and thrive in the canals.
