A 2014 study analyzed 62 years of US hurricanes and found female-named storms were nearly three times as deadly as male-named ones, possibly because people perceived them as less threatening and were less likely to take protective action

A study found feminine hurricane names correlated with higher death rates. Researchers suggest gender stereotypes unconsciously reduce perceived storm threat. Male-named storms prompted stronger evacuation intentions and risk perception. This effect operated through unconscious perceptions, not conscious beliefs. Hurricane naming practices shifted from exclusively female to alternating genders.
