In 1964, a mysterious 27-year-old woman bought abandoned 18-acre island off the coast of Maine & lived there alone; 22 years later, she donated the island to become wildlife sanctuary
Witch Island off the coast of Maine has a fascinating history of private ownership and clairvoyance. Once known as Davis Island, it later became associated with Anna Chittenden, the woman known as the "Witch of Wall Street". Jane Sewall purchased the island in 1964 and lived there in solitude for many years. She later donated the property to ensure its protection as a wildlife sanctuary. The island is now a protected preserve managed by a conservation trust.
