Iran, US make competing claims over control of Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Basij paramilitary head stated the Strait of Hormuz is under Iranian control. This statement followed US President Donald Trump's assertion of total US control. Iran effectively shut the strait after US-Israeli strikes began on February 28. The US imposed a naval blockade, protecting freedom of navigation for non-Iranian vessels. Iran will not reopen the strait unless commitments are fulfilled by the other side.
