India fuels global growth in planned coal mining capacity, report says

India nearly doubled its planned coal mining capacity in 2025 to 638 million metric tons per annum, driving almost all of the global increase in proposed coal projects, according to Global Energy Monitor. The expansion comes as India seeks to meet rising power demand despite rapid renewable growth and slowing global coal demand.
