Look-alike, but not the same: Scientists name first new penguin species in over 100 years
A new species of penguin, named Pygoscelis kerguelensis, has been identified in the southern Indian Ocean. Genetic studies revealed that gentoo penguins constitute four separate species instead of one. The southeastern gentoo, previously unknown, has evolved in isolation and adapted to specific environmental conditions. Conservation efforts are now needed as three of the four species face threats from climate change.
