India’s scorching summer sends coal imports to 15-month high in August

Indian power sector coal imports reached a 15-month peak in August. This surge occurred as electricity demand rose significantly due to a heatwave. Lower hydropower generation also contributed to the increased reliance on imported coal. Domestic coal supplies could not meet the higher consumption levels. Consequently, power producers turned to more expensive overseas coal sources.
