In 2016, Portland approved a 660-kilowatt solar array atop its old landfill. 10 years later, the former dump is a clean-energy site poised to power city operations today

Portland Maine Solar Project gave an old city landfill a surprising second life. Behind Ocean Avenue, the closed site now supports solar energy instead of sitting unused. The City of Portland partnered with ReVision Energy to make that happen. The system was completed in fall 2018. It is expected to operate for 40 years. Along the way, it can provide power while helping reduce CO2 emissions.
