In 1827, a Romanian polymath, mathematician, physicist and engineer invented a device which helped fuel the rapid expansion of global literacy by getting the first Romanian patent issued in history. Petrache Poenaru patented a fountain pen in Paris on May 25, 1827. His pen used a swan quill as an ink reservoir and allowed continuous writing without repeated dipping into an inkwell.
