Scofield, once a bustling mining hub with a vibrant community, faced a tragic setback in 1900 when a catastrophic mine explosion claimed about 200 lives, leaving families shattered. Despite this heart-wrenching event, the town experienced growth for the next twenty years. However, dwindling economic prospects and the deterioration of coal quality eventually led to the closure of the mines.
