Hurricane forecasting may soon get help from an unlikely place: earthquake sensors. Stanford researchers found that seismometers can detect tiny ground movements caused by hurricane pressure and turbulence near the surface. Paired with infrasound microphones, these instruments captured changes during Hurricane Isaac in Louisiana in 2012. The finding could give scientists a new way to track hurricane intensity and improve storm monitoring before dangerous weather reaches U.S. communities.
