In 1934, a New York socialite bought the Pennsylvania mountain where hunters shot hundreds of hawks; the killing stopped almost overnight

Rosalie Edge established Hawk Mountain Sanctuary after seeing a photograph of dead hawks. This sanctuary holds the world's oldest continuous record of raptor migration. Maurice Broun began counting migrating raptors at Edge's suggestion. These counts helped expose the harmful effects of the pesticide DDT. The sanctuary continues its vital conservation work today.
