India needs 86 GW additional thermal power by FY36, 64 GW under works: Govt

India requires 86,440 MW of new thermal power capacity by 2035-36. Over 63,000 MW of this capacity is currently under implementation. Transmission infrastructure development is also progressing to meet growing electricity demand. The nation's total installed generation capacity has reached 548.86 GW as of June 2026. India has transformed from a power deficit to a power sufficient nation.
