Railway tracks are neither concrete nor asphalt; why are stones packed between the ties?

Railway track ballast consists of sharp, angular crushed stones which lock together. These stones spread immense weight and drain water effectively from the rails. Rigid surfaces like concrete create problems by not allowing flexibility. Ballast allows slight flexing, absorbing shock and preventing rail damage. Engineers continue to model and improve this vital, long-standing railway design.
