On this day in 1968, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey enjoyed its very first theatrical engagement ever by premiering for audiences in Washington, D.C. (It's New York premiere would follow tomorrow, along with a limited U.S. release to get people talking.) Careers have been built on analyzing this movie. Oceans of ink spilled.
