The Paradox of Democratic Backsliding

Around the world, authoritarian and populist leaders are eroding civil liberties, weakening democratic checks and balances, and browbeating the press and the judiciary; but rather than taking to the streets in protest, many voters apparently love it. What explains this apparent political masochism?
