Father’s surname not mandatory for mother-raised child, rules HC

The Bombay High Court has ruled that a child raised solely by her mother cannot be forced to use her father's name, surname, or caste. The court stated that recognizing a single mother as the complete parent for a child's identity is constitutional. A society cannot insist a child's public identity be tied to an absent father.
