Sweden plans to tighten citizenship rules

Sweden’s centre-right government plans to tighten the rules for acquiring citizenship, raising residence requirements and introducing stricter tests and income limits.

The proposal extends the minimum period of residence from five years to eight. Applicants must also demonstrate knowledge of the Swedish language and an understanding of Swedish society.

Migration Minister Johan Forssell said the changes mark a clear shift from existing practice.
