Landmark genocide case against Myanmar to be heard by UN top court

The United Nations' top court will begin hearing a landmark genocide case against Myanmar on January 12, 2026. Gambia brought the case against the Southeast Asian country, accusing it of genocide of its Muslim Rohingya minority in the western Rakhine region in 2017. At least 730,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh after the violence. Myanmar has denied the accusation of genocide, saying at a preliminary hearing in 2019 that the accusations were misleading.
