Wall Street moves lower as Trump’s tariff deadline nears

U.S. stocks are losing ground in afternoon trading Monday as the Trump administration steps up pressure on trading partners to make deals before a Wednesday deadline.

The S&P 500 was down 0.9% in the first day of trading in the U.S. after a holiday-shortened week. The benchmark index remains near its all-time high set last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 485 points, or 1.1%, as of 1:12 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.9% lower.
