It still feels a little paranoid to say it out loud: that the United States might be drifting toward something that looks a lot like Russia. Or Hungary. Or some unholy blend of theocratic nostalgia and corporate feudalism. But that gut feeling—the one that says something’s not right—is getting harder to shake. The signs aren’t exactly subtle, either. To anyone paying attention, they’re plenty loud. But they’re also easy to tune out, easy to dismiss as noise, as politics as usual.
