Dire wolves are still extinct. So what happened in the lab?
Is it true that dire wolves have been brought back from extinction? Well, no. Watch in the player above, or on YouTube.
- The biotech company Colossal said it made the world’s first de-extinction on April 7, 2025. It said it has “rebirthed” the dire wolf, which went extinct in the Americas 12,500 years ago.
- But dire wolves are still extinct. Colossal didn’t bring back dire wolves, but it did modify some of the DNA of a gray wolf, using dire wolf DNA. They used the DNA-editing tool CRISPR for this process.
