As The Hill has already reported, it’s a very real possibility that Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) could become the acting president if the GOP can't unify behind a House Speaker before Jan. 20. With Rep. Thomas Massie’s (R-Ky.) announcement that he will not vote for Johnson, only one additional GOP defection is necessary to deny Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) the speakership. The election of the new Speaker could be as painful for the GOP as was Johnson’s recent election, which spanned 15 rounds of voting over 18 days.
