Around 30 African countries criminalize homosexual relations

In Africa, there has been an upsurge in laws criminalizing homosexuality. The recent change in Malian legislation is a prime example.
For several years now, African governments have become increasingly strident in their opposition to queer issues. In February 2024, Ghana passed a law imposing a prison sentence of three years on those who identify as LGBTQ+ and up to ten years on those involved in LGBTQ+ advocacy campaigns.
