The small state of West Virginia has played an important role in the history of the NBA. During the 1950-1951 season Earl Lloyd, who played and starred at West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University), became the first African American player to play in the league. A few years later a native West Virginian, born in the state in the 1930s, became aa star first at a WV high school and later at an in-state public university, before joining the NBA.
