TOPEKA (KSNT) - A man in Berryton captured footage of a smoke devil over the weekend.
Nancy Stous says her husband Kevin Stous was working on a controlled burn near 77th Street in Berryton, Kansas when a vortex emerged from the smoke.
KSNT News Chief Stormtrack Meteorologist Matt Miller says smoke devils are similar to dust devils. He says hot air from the fire starts to rise and catches an existing swirl on the ground and lifts it up into a vortex. Once formed, it will move off on its own.
